Golf Field Trip

Earlier this month, we were able to take our golf skills from PE to the greens at Cedar Knoll Country Club in Hinesburg.  We had so much fun practicing our driving, pitching, chipping & putting on a real course.  We even got to "play" the 18th hole!

Many thanks to Mr. G for the skills practice, Mrs. Ayer & the Cedar Knoll family for letting us use the course, and all of the parent volunteers for helping to make it possible.

Save the Date: Field Trip to Cedar Knoll Country Club

This spring, 2nd and 3rd graders will be doing a golf unit during P.E. class.  The unit will focus teaching proper grip, safety awareness, etiquette of the game, and how to putt, chip, pitch, and drive.  On June 12th, we will be taking a field trip to Cedar Knoll Country Club in Hinesburg. The rain date is scheduled for June 19th.

Second Grade will be golfing in the morning from 8:30-10:30 after which they will return to RES.  Third grade will be golfing from 10:30-12:30 and then return to RES.

I’m looking for a few volunteers to help me run stations.   No experience required! I’ll fill you in on everything that you need to know.  I will need lot of help to ensure that all proper safety protocols are being followed by scholars and appropriate spacing is given when swinging clubs.

Please make sure to have your child bring a snack and water bottle, and apply sunscreen and bug spray at home.

Circus Night Shenanigans!

On Friday night, Mr. G hosted Troy Wunderle of Wunderle's Big Top Adventures at RES for a night of fun with the circus arts.  After enjoying a pizza party, 3rd graders joined the rest of the school for a welcome show where Mr. Troy wowed us with his juggling and balancing skills. And surprised us by stilt walking OVER all of the 4th graders!  Wowee!

We spent the evening rotating between various stations including: hand-eye coordination (juggling, lassoes, jump rope, spinning plates), balance (pogo sticks, stilts, balancing on a ball, pedalos, unicycles, etc.), a dance party and hand-made snow!  What great fun was had by all!

A giant BIG TOP thank you to Mr. Troy and Mr. G for providing us with great entertainment on a Friday night!

Due to the expected chilliness on Friday, February 13th, the 3rd graders Snow Motion visit to Cochran's Ski Area has been postponed.  We will be at RES all day on Friday.  If there is still snow at Cochran's, we'll be visiting on March 20th.

Thank you for your understanding!

Snow Motion, Week 1

On Friday, third graders had the opportunity to ski and/or ride at Cochrans Ski Area for the first time.  After getting the basics from the lodge, skiers headed out to the Mighty Mite to show off their skills before being grouped with other skiers/riders and a volunteer to head out to the big hill via the T-bar.

Other students wrestled with their ski boots for the first time (those bindings are TRICKY!) and then made their way out to Mr. G to try their hand at skating with one and then both skis before making their way to a mini-hill to try out these skills downhill.  Eventually, most students made their way to the Mighty Mite where they were able to continue practicing skills on the rope tow.  We'll keep building these skills when we return to Cochran's later this winter.

One of the most important skill our new skier and riders learned (and we'll keep reinforcing in the weeks to come!) is not only how to fall safely, but also how to get back up on your skis!!

By the end of the day, even though we were tired, we were exhilarated to learn a new skills and smiles were abundant!

THANK YOU, Mr. G & Cochrans Ski Area for allowing us this opportunity and to all the parent volunteers who helped to make this program possible.  We'll see you on the mountain...

A Day on the Courts

This fall, third graders have been practicing tennis skills in PE with Mr. G.  Today, we had the opportunity to hone our skills on the clay courts at the Burlington Tennis Club.  Scholars were able to practice their racquet and ball handling skills including practicing balancing a ball on a racket while moving around the court, tapping & bumping a tennis ball alone and with a partner, practicing underhand serving across the net and hitting the ball baseline to baseline, and practicing their forehand shot.  As you can see from the video, we had a fantastic time!

A huge thank you to the United States Tennis Association for their generous support of new racquets, balls, and nets for our school.   Thanks, also, to the BTC for allowing us the use of their courts...what a great experience to play on real courts! Thank you to Alex, a USTA Tennis Pro, for donating his time to help us learn and practice our skills, and to Mrs. Ankerson for helping to arrange the trip to the courts at the BTC today.

A Day on the Green

On Wednesday, we had the privilege of visiting Cedar Knoll Country Club in Hinesburg to try out our newly learned golf skills.  Many thanks to the Vermont Golf Association who generously donated funds to help us bring The First Tee program to RES, to Mr. G. for teaching us the skills of the sport, to Cedar Knoll for welcoming us, and to all the families who contributed to our Walk-a-Thon!  We hope to continue this program in future years....
