Options for Reading at Home

There are a couple of resources available for students to read and/or listen to e-books at home -- a great option for students to continue to build their reading lives to make reading a habit, not a chore!  Our goal is for students to be reading 20+ minutes a night, this means reading their own books, listening to an adult read, reading to a sibling, or listening to audiobooks.

1. RAZ Kids -- All third graders have been given an account (connected to their teacher) to read via RAZ Kids.  Students could read online at the website by logging on (www.kidsa-z.com) OR via apps on a phone or tablet.  Students have had practice doing this from school and will have login cards in their Book Bags to help with the login process.  As teachers, we work to make sure students are reading books at their "just right" level.  The books can be read to them, they can read them independently, and there is also an option for a quiz at the end.

2.  SORA -- (https://soraapp.com/welcome/login/202587) A virtual library of books (audio and ebooks) available for students to "check out."  Also available as an app for tablets & phones making it even easier!  Select "Mount Mansfield Unified Union School District" and sign in using Google login & password.

3. Learning Ally -- An audiobook resource that uses real human voices to read current books.  Browse the collection and use an app to listen!!  Students use their Google email and passwords from school to login to the app.

Epic Books Online

Epic Books!

One resource available to our students during this dismissal is Epic Books.  Hopefully, you (parents) have received an invitation from Epic to create a home account for your child that connects to our classroom account.  If not, please reach out and let us know the email address you'd like the invitation sent!

For now, students can get on and explore...read and listen to a wide variety of books and become familiar with the platform and the nuance of e-reading.

Eventually, we may "assign" collections of books for students to read that correspond to learning in our virtual class.  We'll let you know when this happens.

Westward Expansion Focused Research!

This spring, third graders have been learning about the era of Westward Expansion, during the 1800s. Small groups of students researched topics of interest related to this era. Together, they took notes, synthesized the information, and planned for teaching others. These slides are a result of this hard work! Please enjoy!

World Culture Celebration

Thank you to everyone who was able to make it to our World Cultures Celebration! We loved sharing our learning with you and tasting the wonderful treats (even crickets!) from around the world! While we were able to share our essays, posters and games with you at the Breakfast, we weren't able to take you to the countries that we studied. BUT we did create Google Tours and hope you will travel with us virtually! Check out the link to our webpage and join us around the world! Third Grade World Cultures 2019

Breakfast Around the World

Thursday, March 14th8:30-9:15 AM in the RES Cafeteria

For the past eight weeks, students have been researching cultures around the world during Reading Workshop, and are using a variety of note taking strategies to gather and organize the information they've learned.  During Writing Workshop, students have been using this information to write articles about the cultures they've studied, working to find connecting ideas between two different cultures and writing to support their ideas with facts.  With all of this hard work under our belts, we're ready to celebrate!
If you're able, please volunteer to bring a breakfast (or snack) item from around the world on the Sign-Up Genius and join in celebrating all of the learning students have accomplished!

**Please DO NOT arrive prior to 8:30 as this causes congestion in the parking lot during morning drop-off for both RES & CHMS.**

Animal Research Clubs

Third graders spent much of the month of May in book clubs during Reading Workshop, studying two different animals while practicing reading information book skills independently in small groups.  At the culmination of the units, groups were asked to create a Google Slides Presentation comparing and contrasting the two animals they studied in whichever ways made sense to them.

These are the final products from this intense research and collaboration project!
