Using MobyMax from Home

     Students are encouraged to use MobyMax from home to work on mastering their basic math facts.  They are set to the facts they first need to work on and the program or teacher adjusts them as they master facts. 

Steps for Logging on at Home

1. Log into our school website at https://richmond.cesuvt.org/
2. Under the link: STUDENTS choose MOBYMAX
   
3. Next students will see this log in screen where they type in their username and password:
4. Students type in: first name.last name (username with no capitals or spaces).  Their password is their lunch number.
5. Students then need to be choosing the fact fluency icon.

If students have trouble logging in at home, have them check with their classroom teacher to make sure they have the correct password.  

Thanks for all of your support!  While we are hoping students are logging in at least three times a week, they can always log in daily for frequent practice!

Ways to Support Your Child at Home with Math

                                                                                  
      At this point in a third grader's math career, we are working on efficiency, precision and flexibility.  One area that can really hamper this goal is when a student isn't solid in their fact fluency.  Students that are automatic in their basic facts are more efficient when solving 3 and 4-digit problems in addition and subtraction and in solving multiplication and division problems.
      Fact fluency is something that students have been working on in a variety of ways throughout their years at RES.  The research shows that students that have mastered their facts can recall them in about 3 seconds.  Every student develops at their own pace and some need more time to achieve mastery.  So, we are giving you some ways to help support your child at home with the mastery of their basic facts.
    One way for this is to find time to go over flash cards with your child or to simply use that time in the car when you are driving to appointments or activities to call out facts for your child to answer.  Some students also need paper pencil to also learn them.  The following are some websites that you could use:

   Also, games are really a fun way for students to practice their facts.  This can be done with some games such as:

Finally, our district no longer uses FASTT Math, but instead uses MobyMax.  This is a great site that we customize for each student.  They log into it through our RES website and then type in their passwords.  Students would benefit from logging into this program at least three times a week at home.

Artist-in-Residence @ RES #gofundme

Performance art and physical movement is so important to the RES community! For the last three years, we have dedicated our resources to hosting an artist-in-residence to our school to work with students in Grades K-4. 

We have had Jeh Kulu (African Dance and Drumming) in 2015, Troy Wunderle (Circus) in 2016, and Gowri Savoor (Lantern Making) in 2017. The scholars and their families have learned from and loved each artist and we're excited to be continuing this great program.

Due to popular request, we are bringing Jeh Kulu back! This traditional West African Dance and Drum company will be coming to Richmond Elementary School in April 2018 for four days.  During this time, students in Grades K-4 will have an opportunity to learn from these amazing Vermont artists during their physical education classes.   Our third grade classes will be using this opportunity to further connect with our World Cultures unit and our hope is to have a special performance-celebration with Jeh Kulu at the end of the week to conclude our learning!

We have raised a portion of the artist fee through grant fundraising, but are seeking your help to ensure that the artists can be here all four days and visit with every classroom! Thank you for supporting the performance arts and physical movement at RES!

There will be dinner/pizza, movement games, dance party, face painting, spring crafts, cup stacking, and makerspace fun. This evening is hosted by the RES PBIS Committee and staff. All proceeds go directly toward our RES Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS).

Girls on the Run Vermont

Girls On The Run

Registration is now open at Richmond Elementary Girls on the Run® is dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

At Girls on the Run, we inspire girls to recognize their inner strength and celebrate what makes them one of a kind. Our 10-week, 20-lesson program, will be held right here at RES! Trained volunteer coaches will foster girls’ physical, emotional, mental, and social well-being, culminating in a wonderfully uplifting 5k Run/Walk where everyone is #1!

Why It Matters
A recent national independent longitudinal study led by Dr. Maureen Weiss, an expert in positive youth development, found that the combination of Girls on the Run’s intentional life skills curriculum and highly trained coaches is key to our program’s impact.

• 97% of participants said they learned critical life skills including managing emotions, resolving conflict, helping others or making intentional decisions that they can use at home, at school and with their friends
• Girls who were the least active at the start of the program increased their physical activity by more than 40%
 • Girls on the Run made a stronger impact on teaching life skills to participants than did organized sports or physical education

Overall, the study showed that participating in Girls on the Run transformed girls’ lives by helping them increase their self-confidence, develop healthy relationships, and feel good about themselves, inside and out.

What You Need to Know

Our season begins on Wednesday, March, 28th and we will meet twice per week, Wednesdays and Fridays, from 3pm -4:30pm at Richmond Elementary School in Room 1 for 10 weeks culminating with our 5k event (TBD).

Registration is offered by paper for the 2018 season. For online registrations, payment plans are offered and we accept debit, credit, and e-check payment options. Girls on the Run Vermont has limited financial assistance available to those who truly need it. GOTR is committed to being accessible to any girl who wants to participate, and is dedicated to ensuring that the program cost is not a barrier to participation.

Snow Motion Updates

Well, it looks like sugaring season is starting early this year (yaay maple syrup!), but this means that Snow Motion on Thursday is cancelled -- bummer.  

Thank you to all of the families for volunteering this year to help supervise our students on the slopes and for contributing financially to the program.  And, of course, a HUGE thank you to Cochran's Ski Area and Mr. G for making it all happen!

No Skiing Tuesday, February 20th!

Due to the weather, Snow Motion at Cochran's, has been postponed tomorrow.  There is a possibility that we may be able to go Thursday.  If you haven't heard back from us by Wednesday night, then it won't be a go on Thursday either.

RES is now publishing a family newsletter filled with the goings-on around school--check it out!   Our third graders are featured for our recent "Going West" project sharing!  Way to go!  Look for future editions in the email boxes soon! 

Snow Motion Starts Next Week

On Tuesday, third graders will embark on another year of Snow Motion (skiing and snowboarding) at Cochran's.  We'll be leaving RES at 11:00 and returning just after 1:00 on Tuesdays until the end of February, weather permitting.  Please plan accordingly for appointments, etc.

Additionally, we'll be eating an early lunch (at 10:30!) on these days to fuel up before hitting the slopes and returning to RES for a snack (we'll be hungry!) and hot cocoa.  Please be sure your skier or snow boarder is prepared for both!

Ski boots and helmets should come to RES.  We'll be dressing in our snow clothes (including boots & helmets) prior to boarding the bus.  As in the past, skis and snowboards can be dropped off at the RES designated area at Cochran's on Tuesday mornings and picked up each afternoon.

Music Fundraiser

RECORDER EXPRESS FUNDRAISER

It’s the time of year that we begin playing recorders again in music class, using a program that I put together using the ‘Recorder Express’ recorder method book.

Each year, students request to take recorders home and to borrow copies of the music. But without extras to spare I consistently have had to say no to that option. But playing at home would greatly encourage their musical growth. And so, this year, in an effort to encourage practice at home, and to raise some funding for the music program, I am offering this opportunity.

Forms were sent home with students on Friday. Please return next week. Ask your teacher if you missed it!

Going West Projects

For several weeks, third graders have been learning about Westward Expansion in the United States during the 1800s.  We've studied why pioneers chose to move west, the hardships and illnesses they faced on the trail and in building a new life, and how the lives of Native Americans were impacted by this expansion into their lands.   We've watched videos, read books, and even participated in a simulation of traveling the trail where, sadly, many of our third grade pioneers perished.

Third graders selected a topic to research further and have been creating a project to share this learning in Enrichment classes and in the classroom.  Thank you to all who braved the elements earlier this week to celebrate the research and creativity of our 3rd graders!  

Projects will also be on display in the RES Library and front display case until the end of the month.  Enjoy!

ISO: Girls on the Run Coaches

Girls on the Run Vermont is looking for coaches for the upcoming season.  The coaching team from last year will not be returning this coming season.  We have had around 20 girls participate at RES each year and we want to keep the program thriving in Richmond! 

Teams meet twice a week after school for 90 minute sessions for 10 weeks beginning the week of March 19th.  All coaches are trained in person to prepare them for the season.  We background check all coaches and at least one coach needs to be CPR/First Aid certified.  It's a truly inspiring program that helps build self confidence for our girls.

What roles are available for volunteer coaches?

All Head and Assistant Coaches support the team by facilitating sessions.  Running Buddies or general volunteers are individuals that run/walk with the girls but do not facilitate the program.  Each team needs at least two head or assistant coaches for a group of up to 15 girls.  Click here for more info:  http://gotrvt.org/becoming-a-coach/

I'm not a runner - can I still coach?

Absolutely!  Anyone that wants to nurture and teach our 3rd-6th grade girls to be joyful, confident and healthy can coach!  Men and women alike!  GOTR is way more than a running program.  We inspire greatness and teach self confidence through a researched based curriculum, and creatively integrate running into the sessions so that girls and coaches can participate in a non-competitive 5k event at the end of the season.  Learn more about the benefits of our program here:  http://gotrvt.org/our-impact/

I've never facilitated a program like this?  What support will I receive?

GOTRVT hosts an in-person coach training to prepare all coaches to deliver the program!  This coach training event is of no cost to coaches and is a fun and interactive event to get us all excited about the upcoming season and answers all of your questions.  All materials for the season are provided to coaches, including a curriculum book, water bottles and t-shirts for the coaches and girls.

When is coach training?

When does the season start for the girls?

Cougar Cub Inventor's Workshop

On Thursday November 30th the RES community gathered with volunteers from the Society of Women Engineers, ECHO Science Museum, Radiate Art Studio, and CHMS and JES educators to celebrate making, creating, building and learning.  Students and their families had an opportunity to try a range of hands on activities that encouraged them to Make, Create and Share!  The evening was a true celebration of collaborative learning and FUN.

This event could not happen without the help of volunteers inside and outside of our school community.  I am so grateful to be surrounded by people that believe in student hands on learning and are willing to give time to create this type of experience.

A Strategy Students are Using for Subtraction

Games to Practice Telling Time

Telling time to the minute on an analogue clock and determining elapsed time are key math skills for 3rd graders.  At home you can help your child by making sure you have an analogue clock in the house, asking your child various questions about what time will it be after a certain amount of time has gone by, and/or having them track their own time that they can complete an activity in.

What is an Inventor’s Workshop?

This workshop is a family-friendly event to MAKE, create, learn, invent, craft, recycle, think, play and be inspired by celebrating arts, crafts, engineering, science and technology.  Students will work with their families to create!  Activities will be facilitated by engineers and teachers, but tasks will be open ended and creative.  Families will have an opportunity to learn together as they experience the fun of making / building / constructing / designing and more! A variety of activities will be available to challenge students from Grades K – 8.

Activities planned for our workshop include:

Cardboard Challenge:  Create with cardboard! The possibilities are endless!

Making a keyboard with bananas!  MaKey MaKey Boards are electronic devices that convert many regular objects into keys on your computer to control programs like Scratch or videos games.  Objects that are conductive, even slightly, like fruit or people, can be used with the MaKey. 

*New this year*Build and Launch a Rocket!  Using makerspaces materials we will build rockets that reach for the stars as they travel several stories into the night sky.

Creating lighted artwork with throwies!  LED Throwies are LEDs connected to coin batteries to create artwork with light.  They can be added to greeting cards or origami, or used to create nightlights or glowing badges. We will have a station to add LEDs to our rockets

Creating interactive circuits with littleBits!  littleBits are electronic modules that snap together with magnets to make circuits.  Each bit has a specific function (light, sound, sensors, buttons, motors, etc), and modules snap together to make larger circuits. We will have a teacher on hand to use synthesizer Little Bits to create awesome sounds.

Checking out a 3D printer in action!  CHMS and RES students have been using a 3D printer during technology/enrichment classes. Come and watch a 3D printer in action and explore the Tinkercad software we use to make our designs.

Creating abstract art with a digital microscope!  DinoXcope Art is artwork created using a digital microscope to photograph intentional arrangements of materials.  

Programming interactive games with Scratch!  Scratch is a visual programming language.  Use colorful interlocking building blocks of code like legos to build interactive games and programs.

Green Screen! Green screen technology is used to create background scenes for pictures in films and photographs.  Come and create your own awesome photo.

JitterBots!  Back due to popularity, you can create your very own jittery robot!

      SNAP Circuits, Art Creation with Radiate Art Space, ECHO Engineering Challenge, Keva Planks, Robots…and more!!!!

Cuentos: Tales from the Latino World

David Gonzalez's Cuentos Tales from the Latino World

Cuentos paints a vivid picture of the people and rich cultures of the Spanish-speaking world with colorful tales from the Caribbean, South America, and the Bronx. From the silly antics of the Puerto Rican anti-hero Juan Bobo to the mysterious dealings and powers of the Orishas, these tales are filled with memorable characters, fantastic plots, and positive messages for children. Spanish language words are sprinkled throughout the stories and songs in such a way that young audiences can repeat and retain their sound and meaning.

Third graders will be visiting the Flynn on Monday, November 13th.  Permission slips came home today (Monday, 10/16) and need to be returned by Wednesday, October 25th.   

Read Books & Earn $$$

The State of Vermont, Office of the State Treasurer is once again offering the "Reading is an Investment" program for students in the state.  The theme this year is "Creative Ideas Pays Off" and aims to give students an overview of how entrepreneurs tap into their creativity and planning skills to achieve financial success.

The information for the program will be coming home with your students.  Many of the books highlighted on the money reading list that focus on basic financial concepts are available in the RES Library.  Students who read at least three books from the list and complete personal reading requirements can send a completed reading log to the Treasurer's office for entry in a statewide drawing for one of twenty $250 accounts in the Vermont Higher Education Investment Plan -- Vermont's official 529 college savings plan.

Last week, RES third graders visited the Burlington Tennis Club to try out all of our tennis skills on the clay courts!  We practiced our ball & racket handling skills, agility, serving, and our backhand and forehand shots!

Then, we traveled to Oakledge Park on Lake Champlain for a picnic lunch and an afternoon of cooperative games.  We all played "Giants, Wizards & Elves" and then had a choice of a scavenger hunt around the park or playing capture the flag.

Open House Next Week

         We are so excited to meet families next week at our Open Houses.  Students have so much to show you, including all of the great things they are learning already.  
        Please note due to a scheduling conflict, Mrs. Ayer's Open House will occur on Thursday, September 28 from 4:45-6:00 p.m.  That way it won't interfere with the younger grade Open Houses.  Thanks for understanding.  
         Mrs. Girouard and Mrs. Ankerson's rooms will be open on Wednesday, September 27 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. 

        Don't forget to visit the PTO Dinner and bake sale open both nights from 5:15-6:00!  There is always some yummy food and treats.

Bar Graphs, Pictographs and Data!

    Third graders started off the year in math learning to analyze data after creating bar graphs and pictographs.  They focused on describing and interpreting the data to compare groups and answer a question.  

Phrases to help students describe the data.

    This year, students were introduced Pictographs for the first time.  In pictographs, symbols represent the data.  Symbols represent more than one piece of data and the key lets the reader know the scale.

    As we move into our next unit on our number system, you can continue your child's learning of graphs at home.  Whenever you see graphs stop and read them together with your child.  Ask them some of the following questions:
What is this graph about?
Who was surveyed in this graph?
What question is being answered?
How can you describe the data?
What question could you ask?

An Awesome First Day of School!

We hope your children came home today as excited as we are!  They are a great group of students who are so excited to learn and make new friends.  Today we learned new expectations, reviewed some expectations, and had fun getting to know each other.  Each Kindness was a book shared in some of the classrooms.  Ask your children what they learned from reading that book.

We can't wait to see them all again tomorrow!

You should be receiving a letter from us in the mail soon with a list of supplies that will helpful to have at the start of the school year.  You can also find it HERE and on the "Family Communication" tab.  That's also where you find another copy of the Summer Reading Bingo boards, just in case you misplaced yours!  We're looking forward to seeing you very soon!
